THE CHECK: Collector T.N. Venkatesh checking the functioning of the roadometer while inspecting the road laying work in Karur. KARUR: A total of 62 road works taken up in Karur district at an estimated cost of Rs. 21 crore with National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) assistance would soon be completed, according to Collector T.N. Venkatesh. Speaking after inspecting road-laying work between M.K. Salai and Mootakkampatti at a cost of Rs. 23.35 lakh, Mr. Venkatesh said that in the Thogamalai Panchayat Union 16 road works for a length of 41.87 km have been taken up through NABARD funding at an estimated cost of Rs. 4.94 crore. In Kadavur Union, five works for a length of 14.37 km were progressing at a cost of Rs. 2.07 crore. In the Kulithalai Panchayat Union, two works for a distance of 4.7 km at a cost of Rs. 51.95 lakh were being undertaken, while in the Krishnarayapuram Union, 11 works over a length of 33.88 km at a cost of Rs. 4.18 crore were under way, Mr. Venkatesh said. On the western side of the district, in the K. Paramathi Union, nine works in over 27 km at a cost of Rs. 2.99 crore were progressing while in Aravakurichi Union, seven works for a total length of 20.30 km at a cost of Rs. 2.39 crore were under way. In the Thanthoni Union, nine works for a length of 24.5 km have been taken up at a cost of Rs. 2.88 crore and in the Karur Union three works costing Rs. 1.36 crore were progressing well, he added. In all, in Karur district a total of 62 road works over a total distance of 174.36 km were being carried out through NABARD assistance in eight panchayat unions at an estimated cost of Rs. 21.04 crore, the Collector said. Interestingly, the Collector personally used the distance recording equipment to test the length of the work being undertaken between M.K. Salai and Mootakkampatti. Thogamalai Block Development Officers Krishnamurthy and Mani and engineers accompanied the Collector during the inspection.
