BJP is main rival: Chavan

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: Union Minister and Congress in charge of Karnataka, Prithviraj Chavan, on Monday admitted that the Bharatiya Janata Party was its main rival in the Assembly elections and not the Janata Dal (S).

Speaking to presspersons, Mr. Chavan said there would be a direct contest in the elections, which he termed as good. Asked if the Congress would follow the BJP in declaring that it would sit in the opposition in the event of not getting a majority, Mr. Chavan evaded a direct reply and said that he would wish the BJP success. He said the Congress would form the government and added that the BJP was a good opposition party.

Mr. Chavan said the response to the Congress campaign in the first phase of polls was good. People had become disgusted with the uncertainty of coalition governments and wanted stability for rapid growth.

Mr. Chavan said the Congress had decided not to put up a candidate in Shikaripur Assembly seat and would support Samajwadi Party candidate S. Bangarappa.
