In the recent past, there is a sudden spurt in incidents of house breaking, dacoity, chain snatching, pick-pocketing as reported in the media. Due to mechanisation of manual activities such as tilling, harvesting, road laying, digging of wells thousands have been thrown out of employment. With the increase in prices of all items these people found it difficult to feed themselves as well as their wards. Hence they might have resorted to all unlawful activities. Just waiver of loans of the farmers won’t help them. The Government should provide them alternative source of income. Farmers should be acquainted with the cultivation of flowers, medicinal and other plants. Other manual labourers should be trained in cottage industry vocations. Further the Government should provide cold storage facilities to preserve their products. All these would alleviate the sufferings of unemployed labourers as well as public. S.S. Subramanian, Madurai. Posting in IT firmsFor the past few years, IT companies have been recruiting engineering students. Of late, some companies in Chennai and Bangalore are delaying abnormally, in giving postings to selected candidates, causing anxiety and mental agony to students and their parents. Engineering colleges should see that postings are given in time by all companies making campus recruitment and companies that delay abnormally should be excluded from this service. R. Pandithurai, Madurai. Core banking serviceI had been to Indian Overseas Bank, North Vadamboki Road Branch on March 31, 2008 at 10 a.m. to deposit some money in my savings bank account at Pudur Branch (Core banking system). The cashier denied to accept the amount and I was informed that deposits to local branches are not accepted. At 10.30 a.m. I paid the same amount at the IOB’s extension counter at Meenakshi College. I really do not know whether core banking system is existing or it is at the discretion of the cashier to make the decision. C.A. Pradeep, Madurai. Improve traffic in cityWhile the traffic in the city is abnormally increasing day by day there are no adequate policemen to regulate it. Bibikulam Junction, Arappalayam Cross Road, Jail Road, Race Course Junction, Fatima College Junction, Koodal Nagar Junction, Madurai Railway Junction are some of the places where policemen need to be posted immediately. Traffic police should come forward to educate the public to use the platform and take action against those who cross quite often the Albert Bridge, Yanaikal bridge in bicycles and tricycles. It is time for the traffic police department to act strictly to regulate the traffic in the city. I request the Commissioner of Police to take action to improve the traffic situation. R.G. Rethinam, Madurai. Prices and PeopleThe insight knowledge of the people living below poverty line through your column will help the Government to combat the price rise. The condition of the poor is deplorable and the price rise is adding to their misery. In the days of lore there were many philanthropists who were willing to feed the poor and it was condemned as feudal system. Now the onerous task is left with the Government. During the short emergency period the hotels were serving Janata Meals just for one rupee. Likewise, the Government may think of meals centre with the aid of self-help group for providing nutritional food for a price say for a rupee or two. It will help the labourers and daily wage earners. V.S. Sankaran, Madurai.
