Load-shedding in some areas of East and West Delhi

Staff Reporter

Owing to outages, water supply also affected in many parts of the Capital

The State utility also had to overdraw power from the Northern Grid

One unit of 200 MW and another of 500 MW at Singrauli were not functioning

NEW DELHI: There was little relief for the Capital from water and power woes on Monday even as the mercury went down a few notches. With the demand for energy far exceeding the city’s own production, the power companies had to shed load in some areas and the State utility also had to overdraw power from the Northern Grid.

Power cuts were witnessed in parts of West Delhi and East Delhi and owing to outages, water supply was also affected in some areas.

Compounding the city’s electricity problems were the forced outages at NTPC’s power plants.

One unit of 200 MW and another of 500 MW at Singrauli were not functioning, thereby causing Delhi to lose out on 70 MW of power. The city did not receive another 50 MW of power from Rihand where a 500 MW unit was out of order.

The maximum load on the system was 3487 MW at 3-10 p.m. and the city’s own generation stood at 1229 MW. The city had to overdraw 370 MW of power from the Northern Grid to meet its needs.

On the water front, the pond level at Wazirabad is yet to reach the mandatory 674.5 feet.

Currently at 673.1 feet, the dip in the pond level has affected water production at the Wazirabad water treatment plant by 20 per cent. Water production at Chandrawal also continues to be lower than the installed capacity, causing a shortage in some areas of Central Delhi including Jhandewalan and Karol Bagh, and in some parts of North Delhi.
