Dairy farmers to get subsidy for cattle feed

Special Correspondent

Thiruvananthapuram: The government has decided to provide dairy farmers with subsidy for cattle feed, Minister for Food and Animal Husbandry C. Divakaran has said.

He was inaugurating a seminar organised in connection with the 17th State conference of the All India Kisan Sabha here on Monday.

Mr. Divakaran said an action plan to increase milk production in the State was on the anvil. He said milk production in the State had gone up by one lakh litres over the past three months. He called on the Department of Animal Husbandry to join hands with the Kerala Livestock Board to improve the lot of the dairy farmers. J. Venugopalan Nair, district president of the Kisan Sabha, presided over the seminar on ‘The 11th Five-year Plan and Dairy Farmers.’ Mangode Radhakrishnan, MLA; P. Rajasekharan Nair, Chief Officer of the Planning Board; and G.R. Anil, general secretary of the Kisan Sabha, spoke.

Presenting a paper, N. Bhasurangan, secretary of the Kerala Ksheera Karshaka Vedi, stressed the need to revise the milk procurement system in the State. Alleging that Milma had failed the milk producers, he said the agency was trying to promote the private sector at the expense of the cooperative sector. He urged the government to start schemes to improve milk production and ensure a remunerative price for dairy farmers. The Vedi proposed a system to ensure that at least 50 per cent of the milk produced was procured through the cooperative sector. It suggested representation for dairy farmers as government nominees in the governing committee of regional milk producers’ unions.
