Delay in completing the work attributed to unseasonable rain The project is estimated to cost Rs. 33 crore
BRISK ACTIVITY: Concreting works in progress on the Shiradi Ghat stretch. DASARAHALLI (SHIRADI GHAT): The Shirdai Ghat stretch on the Mangalore-Bangalore National Highway will be opened for heavy traffic from June 1, Sudhir Krishna, Principal Secretary, Department of Public Works, Ports and Inland Water Transport, said on Monday. The ghat section was closed for repairs in October. Addressing presspersons after inspecting the progress of work on the stretch, he said that the repair work was being executed on a 38-km stretch from Aanemahal near Sakleshpur to Addole in Dakshina Kannada. It includes concreting of 13 critical curves and asphalting. “Asphalting of a 30-km stretch has been completed. The remaining 8-km stretch will be asphalted soon. It includes asphalting of the 1.23-km approach road connecting the concrete curves,” he said. Mr. Krishna said that eight curves had been concreted. One side of the remaining five curves had been concreted. The concreting of the remaining half of five curves was on. In all, 48 culverts had been widened and seven curves were yet to be done. He said that unseasonable rain had affected the progress of work. The Principal Secretary said that the drainage and shoulder work had not been completed. “Those works can be done even if it drizzles. We will complete the 38-km carriageway by May-end,” he said. In addition, the central line painting had to be done and the signage erected, Mr. Krishna added. Mr. Krishna said that the Centre had taken up widening of 81 km of NH 48 between Nelamangala and Devihalli. This stretch was being converted into four-lane highway. The works were being implemented by Lanco Devihalli Highways Private Ltd, a special purpose vehicle (which is a company), constituted for the purpose under National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). The work began in January this year and would be completed in two-and-a-half years. It was being implemented at an estimated cost of Rs. 441 crore on build, operate and transfer (BoT) basis.
