Name of the game

Sharath Srivatsa

BANGALORE: What’s in a name you thought? Some names can give the shivers to candidates. In fact, they could cost them dear what with their namesakes — especially independents — giving them a run for their money in several constituencies.

In Basavanagudi constituency, the Congress candidate and former MLA K. Chandrashekar has a formidable task. Not only has he to contend with the candidates of the main political parties, he has to also contest against three other independents who are his namesakes. Among those in the arena with him are S.K. Chandrashekar, G.S. Chandrashekar and B. Chandrashekar. BJP candidate in Yelahanka S.R. Vishwanath, has to cope with independent candidate K.V. Vishwanath, the former Minister and Congress nominee from BTM Layout Ramalinga Reddy has to face another Ramalinga Reddy, an independent. The BJP candidate in Bommanahalli constituency, Satisha Reddy, has to put up with another Satisha Reddy, an independent.

The former Minister and Janata Dal (Secular) candidate from Chamarjpet, Z. Zamir Ahmed Khan, will face Mohammed Zamir, an independent. At Padmanabhanagar, former Minister and BJP candidate R. Ashok will compete with Ashok, an independent. It is a different situation for other candidates, as the official party candidates share common names. In Bangalore South constituency, C. Manjunath of Janatal Dal (Secular) and R. Manjunath of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) are in the fray along with M. Krishnappa of BJP and M. Krishnappa, an independent.

Interestingly, if Congress leader S.M. Krishna has chosen not to contest in the elections, another S.M. Krishna, a candidate of Bharatiya Praya Paksha is contesting in Mahadevapura constituency. Hebbal constituency will witness Syed Akbar Basha, Syed Asif and Syed Mustafa, all independents in the fray along with the leaders of major political parties.
