‘Officials in Secretariat have no commitment’ Officials’ lethargy blamed for delay in decisions ALAPPUZHA: Slamming lethargy in the Secretariat, Coir and Cooperation Minister G. Sudhakaran has said only a complete revamp of the State’s administrative headquarters would enable any government to implement people-friendly policies. Inaugurating a public meeting in connection with the 42nd annual district conference of the Kerala Gazetted Officers’ Association (KGOA) here on Monday, Mr. Sudhakaran said several officials in the Secretariat had no commitment to work at all, as a result of which crucial decisions were being delayed. Citing the government’s proposal to increase the number of members in the Travancore Devaswom Board from three to seven, the Minister said an urgent query from the Union government was kept pending by one official for 47 days, in spite of the file being marked as ‘Urgent’. There were instances when files sent by the Minister to the Chief Minister for urgent approval did not reach the Chief Minister even after 32 days, all because of the indolence of officials. “Most of them, given their attitude, are fit to work only for bourgeoisie governments. They have been like this for the last 52 years. That’s why a complete revamp of the Secretariat is necessary. Officials should also educate the public that a government cannot do everything under the sun. Every government and administrative system has its own limits and these must be explained to the public,” he said, adding that politicians and officials who made impractical promises during elections had created a notion among the people that governments were omnipotent. “Once a government fails to keep such unrealistic promises made during elections, people lose faith and do not vote for them again. The LDF, on the other hand, has made only realistic promises and all of them are being kept,” he said.
