Triangular fight in Malavalli

K.N. Venkatasubba Rao and B.S. Ramesh

Bangalore: The voters of Malavalli (SC) constituency have been facing many problems such as unsafe interior roads and poor hospital management, apart from the grievance over distribution of BPL cards.

They prefer to speak about development in their constituency in a resigned manner. But they are happy that the delimitation process has fulfilled their dream of making the constituency “complete”, with the inclusion of Kirugavalu hobli, which was a nucleus of the erstwhile Kirugavalu constituency.

Although the delimitation has facilitated over 50,000 votes with the inclusion of Kirugavalu hobli, a cross section of people complain that of late voters have cultivated a kind of “indifference” to exercise their franchise as Malavalli has been a reserved constituency.

This indifference is having an adverse impact on development here.

Of the 14 candidates in the fray, Mr. Somashekar of the Janata Dal (U) was elected four times and he lost twice from the constituency.

K. Annadani is contesting the elections for the second time on the Janata Dal (Secular) ticket.

P.M. Narendra Swamy, a Congress rebel is contesting as an independent.

He contested twice unsuccessfully on the Congress ticket. Y.S. Siddaraju of the Congress and Mahadevaiah of the BJP are first-timers. Mr. Mahadevaiah who was with the Congress joined the Congress recently.

For the voters of Malavalli constituency, it is “candidates first and the party next.” From their point of view, the elections will witness a close triangular fight among Mr. Somashekar, Mr. Narendra Swamy and Mr. Annadani.

A section of the voters predict a BJP win this time.
