Research on drumstick to be taken up
Staff Reporter
THENI: The Horticultural College Research Institute will take up two major research projects this year to develop a new drumstick variety that gives yield even during off season and also new hybrid varieties of vegetables, according to S. Natarajan, Dean of the Institute.
Talking to press persons in the institute at Periakulam on Monday, he said the projects would be implemented in two years in association with Tamil Nadu Agriculture University in Coimbatore.
Existing variety of drumstick has been giving yield only in summer.
It will not bring any income to farmers during other seasons of the year.
The off-season production of drumstick through evaluation and management project will help farmers get yield through out the year.
This research will take place simultaneously at Agriculture Research Station at Virinjipuram in Vellore district.
Successful findings of the research will be taken to farmers.
Above all, consumers get vegetable throughout the year.
In another project, the institute will develop hybrid varieties of tomato, brinjal and bitter guard, Mr. Natarajan added.
