Ramanathapuram youth sets Guinness record

C. Jaishankar

RAMANATHAPURAM: A 21-year-old youngster from Ramanathapuram has created a Guinness record for extinguishing flame of 151 candles by blowing a single breath.

V. Sankaranarayanan of Velipattinam, who demonstrated the feat in front of the Collector, R. Kirlosh Kumar on January 18, told The Hindu that the Guinness Book of World Records had recognised his achievement and sent the certificate for the same.

He has surpassed the earlier record of David Lamy of France for extinguishing 117 candles. It was recorded in 2001. “Put out the flame on a few candles in a single breath may be easy. But extinguishing more than 30 to 40 candles in a breath is a tough job. It needs a committed breath exercise through yoga,” says Mr. Sankaranarayanan, who has just completed a diploma in engineering.

He added that yoga practice taught by a leading yoga pundit Padmanaban of Ramanathapuram had helped him to do the feat.

He took a 6-month practice to control the art of inhaling air and emitting it in a more disciplined way.
