PANAJI: Raja alias Sandip Acharya (35), the prime accused in the murder of Biranchi Das, coach of child marathon runner Budhia, surrendered before the Panaji police on Monday afternoon. On Saturday, a Sub Divisional Judicial Magistrate’s Court in Bhubaneswar had declared Acharya an absconder and issued a non-bailable warrant against him. According to sources in the Panaji police, a calm Acharya walked into the city police station at about 2.40 p.m. and volunteered to surrender before the Superintendent of Police, Panaji Headquarters. Inspector General of Police Kishen Kumar told The Hindu on Monday evening that the Goa police got the information from the Orissa police about Acharya’s plans. “We formally arrested him under section 41A of Cr.PC, registered his statement and he was sent for medical check-up. He will be produced before the court on Tuesday and then handed over to the Orissa police who have been formally communicated of his surrender,” said Mr. Kumar. Mr. Kumar said he had spoken to the Orissa police who later informed him that a police team had already left for Goa and it would arrive in Goa on Tuesday to take his custody. Sources in the Goa police said the Orissa police had tracked down his whereabouts in Goa on Monday morning with the help of his mobile phone and informed the Goa police about his expected surrender. According to the sources, Acharya arrived in Panaji by bus from Mumbai.
