Turf pitch to be re-laid

VISAKHAPATNAM: The turf pitch of the ACA-VDCA Stadium here will be re-laid under the supervision of a curator from Australia, Ricky Aitken, from Tuesday, the Vice-President of the Andhra Cricket Association (ACA), P.R. Narayanaswami, said here on Monday.

Aitken, who is also a consultant of the Leisure Turf and Landscapes of Hong Kong, along with an Executive Committee Member of the Hyderabad Cricket Association, John Manoj, visited the stadium on Monday.

The Secretary of ACA, V. Chamundeswaranath, Joint Secretaries of VDCA, G.J.J. Raju and J.K.M. Raju, accompanied them.

The relaying would be completed by June 30, the curator of ACA, Nagamallayya, said.

Win for VPSC

Sri Polamamba FC (Chittivalasa) failed to convert the penalties, losing to Visakhapatnam Port Sports Council 1-4 in the quarterfinals of the Bhupathi Raju memorial football tournament at the GVMC Stadium here on Monday. Both teams were goalless after the regulation time.

Tie-breaker was imposed and Port scored through Mirinda, Bhogiraju, Appa Rao and Ashok while only Baby converted for the Chittivalasa team.

Volleyball trials

As many as 92 boys from across the country turned up at the Port Indoor Stadium here on Monday to participate in the two-day trials to select players for the Indian youth volleyball camp being organised by the SAI STC here.

The camp will commence on May 7 at the same venue.

The Selection Committee consisting of National coach, M. Syam Sundara Rao, Kutty Krishnan and Mulini Reddy, will select about 34 boys for the camp.

The number would be pruned to 24 and finally to 18 as the camp progresses.

Chief coach, G.E. Sridharan, who would run the camp along with assistant coaches K.V. Ramana Rao of SAI STC (Vizag) and Abhimanyu from Uttar Pradesh, Vice-President of Volleyball Federation of India, S. Kodandaramiah, Secretary of the district volleyball association, P.G.V.R. Naidu, and Administrator of SAI STC here, T. Kishore Kumar, were present.

The camp is being held in preparation for the Asian youth boys’ volleyball championship to be held in Colombo from October 11 to 21.

Good performance

India’s performance in the previous championships has been good.

It won the 2003 championship held here ahead of Iran and Korea; took third place in the 2005 meet held in Tehran behind Iran and Korea and climbed up to the runner-up spot in the last championship in Malaysia in 2007 when Iran won the title and China was third.
