Jain devotees to take out procession

Staff Reporter

COIMBATORE: Jain devotees in Coimbatore will break a 14-month fast, the “Varshitap,” on May 8.

Fasting

The 225 devotees belonging to all sects of Jain religion had been fasting on alternate days since March 21, 2007 following the tradition of Lord Adinath, the first Jain Tiranthakara. The ‘tapaswis’ would break the fast with sugarcane juice on May 8.

The fast would be broken under the auspices of Jain Acharya Sree Jinothamsuriswarji Maharaj, Sadhvi Sree Bhavya Guna Sreeji and Sadhvi Sree Atmadarshna Sreeji.

The programmes in connection with the ‘Varshitap’ are being organised by Sree Rajasthan Jain Swetambar Murthi Pujak Sangh, Coimbatore.

In connection with the ceremony, a procession would be taken out from the Jain Temple on R.G. Street to Hastinapur Nagari (Sree Nehru Vidyalaya) on May 7 at 11 a.m.

More than 10,000 devotees are expected to participate.

Annadhanam

An annadhanam would be held at Nehru Vidyalaya on May 9 at noon.

About 40 Sadhus from Rajasthan are taking part in the pujas.
