No caretaker for the prestigious OSA

BHUBANESWAR: Orissa Sahitya Akademi is in news again. And this time not for courting any controversy or making any tall-talks like last year but for its complete inaction. Making a mockery of the announcements and assurances of the politicians and bureaucrats including the Chief Minister and the Culture Minister during its golden jubilee celebrations, the apex literary body of the State, an autonomous body, runs without any caretaker today. Ironically it’s Akademi’s golden jubilee year.

Its president and prominent poet Deepak Mishra passed away about three months ago and there has not been any move by the Government to fill up the vacancy. And adding to the pity, there has been no Vice-President for the Akademi ever since Hussain Rabi Gandhi’s tenure was over.

“The constitution of the Akademi states that the executive council has to be constituted within three months of the formation of the general council. But, no such initiative has been taken so far. ” rued the General Council members Kedar Mishra, Bharat Majhi and Durga Prasad Panda. The Chief Minister has been delaying the decision for reasons known to him, they alleged.

When contacted, Culture Director R.N. Nanda claimed that efforts are on to fill up the vacancies at the Akademi soon.
