Rural employment scheme begins in Namakkal

Staff Reporter

NAMAKKAL: The Namakkal district administration has begun providing works to people in 15 village panchayats under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme from May 2.

Inaugurating the works at the Kolaram panchayat, near here, recently, District Revenue Officer G. Govindaraj said that the administration had selected five village panchayats in each block and given approval to carry out 394 development works initially.

Works to the tune of Rs. 1.2 crore have begun in 15 panchayats on May 2.

Men and women aged above 18 years volunteering manual work will be given employment under the scheme, which is aimed at enhancing the livelihood security of households in rural areas by providing at least 100 days of guaranteed wage employment in every financial year to every household.

The scheme also aims to minimise the migration of people from the rural areas to urban parts in search of employment and empower the rural poor.

Over 1.20 lakh people belonging to 87,101 families in 331 village panchayats in the district have sought work under the scheme so far. Identity cards were given to 32,552 people in 75 panchayats in the first phase.

Works

The administration would give works such as removal of silt from the water bodies and water carrying channels, formation of mud roads and removal of shrubs on both sides of the National Highways.

The wages would be provided through the respective panchayat presidents in front of the committee set up in this regard.

Mr. Govindaraj called upon all the officials and elected representatives to cooperate with the district administration for the effective implementation of the scheme.

District Rural Development Agency Project Officer P. Renuga Devi and senior officials were present.
