20 injured as KSRTC bus collides with lorry

Out of control: The bus that was involved in an accident near Elathur in the city on Tuesday.

Kozhikode: At least 20 persons were injured in an accident involving a tanker lorry and a Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus at Elathur on the Kannur-Kozhikode National Highway on Tuesday morning.

Ten of the injured, including the driver, Mani, 38 and conductor Pradeepan, 45 of the KSRTC bus, were admitted to Kozhikode Medical College Hospital. A few of them were admitted to the Baby Memorial Hospital at Arayadathupalam here. First aid was given to those who sustained minor injuries.

The Kottarakkara-bound KSRTC bus, that started its journey from Kollur, collided with a tanker lorry carrying chemicals around 6.30 a.m. The driver and helper of the Gujarat registered tanker lorry escaped after the incident. The police have seized the vehicle. The bus, after colliding with the lorry, hit a tree, an electric post, a house and then turned turtle, eye witnesses said. Fire fighters of the Department of Fire and Rescue Services had a tough time pulling out the conductor who was trapped inside the vehicle, said V.M. Bernard, Station Officer, Beach Fire Station.

In another incident, a tanker lorry containing Liquefied Petroleum Gas of the Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited skidded near the Feroke police station on Tuesday. The vehicle bearing Karnataka registration was proceeding to Palakkad from Mangalore, said Antony Sebastian, Station Officer, Meenchanda.

One killed, 3 injured

Correspondent writes from Kalpetta: A person was killed and three others were injured when the car in which they were travelling collided with a mini-lorry on NH 212 at Krishnagiri, near Meenangadi, in Wayanad on Monday midnight.

The deceased, who was the car driver, was identified as Viswanathan Nair, 41, of Thattarappalli, Balussery.
