They are smelted to extract metal
|
Sirsa: Over 1,630 kg of coins of various denominations were on Tuesday seized from a truck on the National highway near here and two persons arrested on counterfeiting charges.
The coins in denominations of 25 paise, 50 paise, Re.1 and Rs.2 were packed in nine gunny bags loaded in a Tata Canter which was stopped near Old Truck Union here, police said.
They said the coins weighed 1637.28 kg and the truck was bound for Punjab, possibly for smelting it and extracting the metal.
Shortage
There is a general coin shortage in the country amid reports that hoarders melt high grade stainless steel coins and remould them into razor blades, which fetch much more than the face value. Manoj, a resident of Saldha village in Jhajjar district and Anil of Sat Rod in Hisar were arrested and the truck impounded, police said.
They have been booked under sections 232 (counterfeiting coins), 247 (fraudulently reducing weight/altering composition of coins) and 249 (altering appearance of coin to change its denomination) of the Indian Penal Code besides some other sections of the Small Coins Act 1971.
A police remand ia lso likely to be sought for questioning Manoj and Anil when they are presented before a local court here on Wednesday. — PTI
