Annual Chithirai festival begins at Veerapandi temple

THENI: Thousands of devotees from various parts of the district took part in the inauguration of the annual Chithirai festival at Sri Gowmariamman Temple at Veerapandi near here on Tuesday.
At the outset, the Goddess Sri Gowmariamman reached the temple from Veerapandi.
Earlier, the Goddess was mounted on a florally decorated palanquin and taken out in a procession to the temple.
Devotees waited in a long queue to have a darshan of the Goddess and to pour holy water on the ‘kambam.’
Meanwhile, heavy police personnel were deployed on the temple premises to provide security to pilgrims and to regulate the crowd.
A police watch tower with video cameras has been installed near the temple to monitor the crowd. Home guards, special police have been deputed for security duty.
Health officials have set up a special medical camp to treat pilgrims in case of an emergency. Fire tenders are also kept ready.
Police official have been making announcements frequently on safety of pilgrims.
The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (Division-IV) Limited has set up two temporary bus stands near the temple. It has started operating special buses to the temple from various parts of the district. The holy ‘kambam’ was installed on April 16. PWD officials have released 100 cusecs of water into Mullaperiyar from the Periyar dam to enable pilgrims to take a holy dip.
Holy car procession will take place on Friday and the festival will conclude on May 13.
