Capitation fee: action against colleges sought

Special Correspondent

PUDUCHERRY: Members belonging to different political parties on Tuesday urged the government to take stern action against the managements of private medical colleges that had been collecting capitation fee from the students.

Replying to S.P. Sivakumar (DMK), Education Minister M.O.H.F. Shajahan said the managements of engineering colleges and the medical colleges run by the non-minorities had been earmarking 50 per cent of seats for the government quota. There was no proposal to increase it to 65 per cent, he added.

A decision on the issue would be taken in a week after discussing with the Chief Minister, he said. Most of the private medical colleges in the Union Territory were run by linguistic minorities.

Mr. Sivakumar said the managements would come to terms if the government resorted to stringent measures to curb capitation fee.

Leader of the Puducherry Makkal Congress K. Lakshminarayanan said the members had demanded legislation last year also to regulate these colleges and ensure that adequate number of seats were earmarked to the government quota.

R.Viswanathan (Communist Party of India) wanted the government to find out if the private medical colleges run by the minorities had allotted seats to students belonging to the minorities and candidates from the Union Territory.
