Crime rate down in State: Jana

Home Minister reviews law and order situation with police top brass

HYDERABAD: The crime rate in Andhra Pradesh dropped by 3.24 per cent during the first three months of this calendar year, compared to the corresponding period last year due to a fall in the number of burglaries, robberies, kidnaps and rapes.

Besides, political violence, extremist and terrorist activity, ISI operations and instances of communal disturbances have all plummeted. However, murders had gone up from 590 to 593 during the period.

This was stated by Home Minister K. Jana Reddy at a press conference here on Tuesday after reviewing the law and order situation in the State with the police top brass in connection with the forthcoming byelections.

He said violence and the crime against women had also dropped from 4,957 cases last year to 4,740 this year.

There were 166 robberies last year but the number fell to 140 this year.

Similarly, 24 dacoities were reported in 2008, against 28 last year. The number of kidnappings too fell from 523 to 433.

Mr Jana Reddy said going by these figures, it was an “indisputable fact that peace prevailed in the State.”

He regretted that while the real situation was like this, some political leaders were trying to project a picture as if the crime rate was high.
