Bail granted in spirit smuggling case High Court round-up

Special Correspondent

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala High Court, on Tuesday, granted bail to Yakoob, proprietor of Expert Lines Enterprises, and another accused arrested in connection with the misuse of the green channel facilities of Malabar Cements for smuggling in spirit through the Walayar check-post.

Justice K.P. Balachandran ordered that they be released on bail on executing a bond for Rs. 30,000 with two solvent sureties for the like sum. They should appear before the investigation officer on all days for two weeks. Besides, they should not influence or intimidate the witnesses in the case. Yakoob was arrested on April 5 from his house. The Palakkad sessions court dismissed his bail petition. According to him, he was included in the list of accused as an afterthought. The excise officials had investigated the case and were convinced that he was not involved. He was charged with an offence under the Abkari Act to harass him. Earlier, he had only been charged with acting in a negligent manner as the manager of the firm.

The other accused who was granted bail is Abdul Rahim. The court granted anticipatory bail to three other accused, Mujib Rahiman, Jojo and Sheen Mondy Jose. They were asked to execute a bond for Rs. 50,000 with two solvent sureties for the like sum in the event of their arrest.

Chekannur case

The court ordered withdrawal of the arrest warrant against three witnesses in the Chekannur Moulavi murder case and the order impounding their passports after their counsel undertook that they would appear before the Central Bureau of Investigation’s Special Court in the second week of June. In a petition, Faizal, P.A. Manaf and M. Aboobaker Haji, all living in Dubai now, challenged the special court’s orders attaching their property, issuing the arrest warrant and impounding their passports. The orders were passed against them as they had failed to respond to the court’s repeated summons.
