KOCHI: Every pond, paddy field and other wetland systems in an area will soon find a place on a digital map. The images will be of high resolution. The mapping is part of efforts by the Kerala State Biodiversity Board (KSSB) to evolve a management system for wetlands in the State. Scientists from the Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History and the Kerala Forest Research Institute are working on the project. The project will map all the wetlands in an area and list their major biodiversity aspects, V.S. Vijayan, chairman of the KSSB, said. “The mapping of the wetlands is a laborious process and we have fixed a deadline of 10 months. The initial mapping is being carried out by GIS system. Later, the data generated by remote sensing will be physically verified, explaining the process of the first ever-such attempt in the State,” Dr. Vijayan said.
