Farmers’ plea to increase compensation for crop damage

Many left out of relief list: association president

TROUBLED: Members of Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam staging a demonstration in Thanjavur on Tuesday.
THANJAVUR: Members of Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam, affiliated to Communist Party of India (Marxist), staged a demonstration in front of Panagal building demanding increase in the flood relief amount to farmers so that it might fully compensate their losses.
K. Kamaraj, district president of the association, S.Gnanamanickam, Thanjavur union secretary, and Sami Nadarajan, district secretary, led the agitation.
They said that many farmers were left out of the list for relief.
They should be included in the list and provided with relief.
The Central Government should sanction Rs. 2,640 crore flood relief sought by the State Government.
Crop insurance
Modified crop insurance scheme should be implemented, Rs 1,000 per quintal of paddy and Rs. 1,500 per tonne of sugarcane should be paid.
Waiver of loans in nationalised banks announced by the Central Government should be implemented immediately.
Irrigation and drainage canals in the district should be desilted. National Rural Employment Guarantee scheme should be implemented in all the villages.
Similar demonstrations were held before taluk offices at Thiruvaiyaru, Papanasam, Pattukottai and Thirupanandal.
