The Vice-Chancellor, TNAU, C. Ramasamy listing the proposed projects of the Institute of Commercial Horticulture in Udhagamandalam on Monday at the Hindustan Photo Films on Friday.

Udhagamandalam: An Eco tourism Park formed by the Institute of Commercial Horticulture of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) at its Wood House farm near here will be thrown open to the public soon, said the Vice-Chancellor, TNAU, C. Ramasamy here on Monday.

Speaking to newspersons, he said that the park created with funds provided by the Hill Area Development Programme (HADP) will feature 350 species of medicinal plants. Pointing out that it will serve as a training facility for farmers, students, rural youth etc, he said that a two acre nursery for propagating different medicinal and aromatic plants will form part of the park.

Organic plantlets will be made available to the farmers. A birds eye view of the entire park can be obtained from a wooden view point erected in an elavated part of the park.

Stating that an environmental research centre is in the process of being established at the Wood House farm in collaboration with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), he said that it will help monitor environmental pollution like black carbons, carbonmonoxide, carbon dioxide and aerosols.

A meteorological observation and forecasting unit of the Indian Meteorological Department is also being established. It will issue weather related bulletins to help farmers. The objective of the Institute which was until recently called the Horticulture Research Station is to impart training and organise research activities.

However, since agriculture and horticulture are undergoing changes rapidly, the emphasis during the coming years would be on agri-business. The Institute will provide valuable tips on cultivation and marketing of medicinal plants and organic farming.

Stating that traditional and conventional farming have promoted mono-culture, he said that the system should change. Though in many ways the benefits of research have reached the farmers, a lot more still needs to be done to shorten the gap.
