Railways accord Mini Ratna status to IRCTC

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Union Ministry of Railways has accorded “Mini Ratna” Category I status to the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC). The status is granted under the Department of Public Enterprises (DPE) guidelines to make a public sector undertaking more efficient and competitive. It allows greater financial autonomy and delegation of powers to the company in recognition of its performance.

An arm of the Indian Railways, IRCTC carries out diverse activities for passengers that include catering on trains and at railway stations, manufacture of bottled water “Rail Neer”, internet ticketing, running a railway enquiry call centre, offering tourism packages and running special tourist services like the “Bharat Darshan” trains.

IRCTC is planning to set up a hundred budget hotels at railway stations across the country and also top launch a pan-India luxury train shortly. It reported a net profit of Rs.20.22 crore in 2006-07 compared to Rs.19.78 crore in 2005-06, while the turnover stood at Rs.433.54 crore in 2006-07 fiscal.
