This Day That Age
A deputation consisting of 70 women, on behalf of the National Federation of Indian Women, on May 5 urged the Law Minister, Mr. Ashok Sen, to bring forward a bill to abolish dowry system. The deputation had earlier assembled outside the Parliament House and presented to the Law Minister a memorandum signed by 15,000 women demanding immediate legislative measures for abolishing the dowry system. The memorandum said, “Any reform of Hindu marriage cannot be complete without putting an end to this unconscionable and humiliating custom of bride-money, which has degraded and ruined the lives of millions of our young women.” The members said later the Law Minister assured them that the Government would soon bring forward a bill for the purpose.
