dated May 7, 1958: Pulitzer Prize

Pulitzer prizes were awarded on May 5 to the Broadway play Look Homeward, Angel, to Samuel Barber for his American opera, “Vanesa” and to the novel, A Death in the Family, by the late James Agee. The New York Times won a prize for international reporting – the first time in the 41-year history of the awards that this particular prize has gone to a newspaper or a news agency. The newspaper was honoured for “its distinguished coverage of foreign news, which was characterised by admirable initiative, continuity and high quality during the year.” The prizes, established by the late newspaper proprietor, Joseph Pulitzer, are made annually by the trustees of Columbia University. The public service newspaper award is a gold medal. The other journalistic prizes are worth 1,000 dollars each and the literary awards are worth 500 dollars.
