dated May 7, 1958: Memorial in Hiroshima

A badly-scarred little boy climbed up a flight of steps in Hiroshima on May 5 to unveil a bronze statue dedicated to children who died when this city was hit by an atomic bomb in 1945. The boy, who was injured by the blast, started the memorial-building fund in honour of his sister, Teiko, who died as a result of the attack. It was built at a cost of 5,400,000 yen with money donated by children from Japan and other parts of the world.
