TUMKUR: M. Mallikarjun Kharge, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee President, said here on Tuesday that he was confident that the Congress would win a majority and form the Government on its own. Mr. Kharge was talking to presspersons at the Mahatma Gandhi Stadium here after inspecting arrangements for the party’s election meeting on Wednesday. Congress President Sonia Gandhi will address the meeting. He said: “Congress will win the majority. I have no doubt about it. It only remains to be seen whether the party will romp home a working majority or a thumping one.” The KPCC President said it was not just his assessment. The main rivals in the fray had accepted defeat even while running to the polls. He quoted BJP leader L.K. Advani as having said that the party would be ready to sit in the Opposition, and H.D. Deve Gowda, Janata Dal (S) President as having challenged that no party could form the Government without seeking the JD(S) support. Mr. Kharge said the BJP and the Janata Dal (S) had agreed that neither of them would win the majority. He said Ms. Gandhi would address the election meeting in Tumkur and K.R. Puram on Wednesday. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh would hold a discussion with selected intellectuals from different fields in Bangalore on Thursday.
