Corrections and clarifications

The caption of the accompanying photograph in a report “Somnath agrees to withdraw privilege move against MPs” (May 6, 2008, page 1) was “Mum is the Word: BJP MPs (from left) Sangeeta Singh Deo, Sirichand Kripalani and Syed Shahnawaz Khan with Congress MP Jyotiraditya Scindia during a ‘mouth shut’ protest at the Parliament House in New Delhi on Monday. They were protesting against the Speaker referring the ‘disorderly’ conduct of 32 MPs to the Committee on Privileges.” It should have been Syed Shahnawaz Hussain.

The last paragraph in a report “What you can do to fight asthma” (Chennai city, May 6, 2008, page 2) was “Both intranasal sprays and antihistamine tablets help treat the disease. But Dr. Kumar and Dr. Ilangho say the intranasal spray is most effective because it reaches its target — the lungs — immediately through the airway rather than having to be digested and passed into the bloodstream ….” It should have been “Both intranasal sprays and antihistamine tablets help treat the disease. But Dr. Kumar and Dr. Ilangho say the inhaler is most effective because it reaches its target — the lungs — immediately through the airway ….”

The caption of the accompanying photograph in a report “Micro chip implants for temple elephants” (Tamil Nadu edition – Chennai, May 6, 2008, page 2) was “For Better Protection: Forest department officials implant a micro chip on Lakshmi, elephant of the Manakula Vinayagar Temple, in Puducherry on Monday. Chief Wildwife Warden P. Devaraj (right), is in the picture.” It should have been “wildlife”.

The heading of a report was “Kidney cases on the rise in India” (Andhra Pradesh, May 6, 2008, page 5) leading to a query. The text was on the high incidence of kidney failure and hypertension in India. (Some editions had the heading “Kidney disease on the rise in India”.)

The second paragraph in a column “Something to be ashamed of” (“Sport”, May 6, 2008) was “There have been numerous cases of international players not knowing the laws of the game. In the Jamaica Test against Ajit Wadekar’s Indian team in 1971, the West Indies skipper Sir Garfield Sobers enforced the follow-on without realising that the rain-curtailed Test match was reduced to four days and the follow-on was applicable for 150 runs and not 200 runs.”

A reader points out that India were all out for 387 and the West Indies were all out in reply for 217, so where is the question of the West Indies enforcing the follow on? After the West Indies were all out, Wadekar went to Sobers to inform him that he was enforcing the follow on. This took Sobers by surprise since he reckoned that the follow on mark in a Test was 200 and not 150. He was informed that it was a four-day match with rain having washed out the first day’s play and under the circumstances Wadekar was quite right in asking the West Indies to follow on with India obtaining a lead of 170 runs. The columnist is right in observing that Sobers may not have been well versed with the laws of the game, but he has got the facts reversed.
