Mystery fever claims lives of children

BERHAMPUR: A killer fever is claiming lives of children at villages in Kashipur block of Rayagada district since April 17.

It has already claimed lives of around nine children at Podbasil and Poadapadar villages of the Kashipur block. But the disease that is causing these deaths is yet to be ascertained.

At least six children have died of the disease at the Podabasil village of Sunger panchayat from April 17 to April 30, accepted the Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) of Rayagada, P.Sitaramaya.

He along with a medical team visited the village. A Medical team comprising of two doctors have been deployed at this village to provide treatment to other ailing children.

During his visit the CDMO also identified four children suffering from fever at the village. They were shifted to nearby hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile reports have also come up regarding deaths of three other children at the Podapadar village during past one week.

Mr. Sitaramaya said the blood samples of patients and other persons from the Podbasil village has been sent for testing and the cause of death causing heavy fever of children can not be said for sure till reports arrive. He also advocated need of a team comprising of expert paediatricians visiting the affected areas to study the situation. Similar demands have also come from different quarters of Kashipur block.
