Priest faced pressure from creditors, police say

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: Pressure from creditors might have forced the priest into the suicide pact along with his family members, the jurisdictional police said on Tuesday.

Vinod Sankaran Namboodiri, a priest at the Ayyappa shrine at J.C. Nagar here, allegedly entered into the suicide pact along with his wife Ranjini, his son Manikantan (2) and 10-month-old daughter Mohini on Monday. The infant died, while the condition of Mr. Namboodiri continues to be critical. Ranjini and Manikanta are recovering.

The J.C. Nagar police said they recovered a note purportedly written by Mr. Namboodiri which talks about pressure from creditors. The note also reportedly refers to his inability to clear his debts as those who had borrowed from him had not paid him back. “We are awaiting his recovery to take his statement before proceeding with the case,” a police officer said.

Meanwhile the temple authorities told The Hindu as far as they were concerned Mr. Namboodiri had a decent income.
