Belgaum: In a major decision and to attract doctors to serve in government-run Community Health Centres, the State Government has announced a quantum jump in the monthly honorariums paid to doctors appointed on contract basis.

The Government has decided to hike the honorarium to Rs. 50,000 a month to a doctor joining these centres, according to M. Madangopal, Secretary, Health Department.

Reviewing the progress made in the department in the seven districts in Belgaum division here on Tuesday, he observed that the Community Health Centres in the State were facing shortage of doctors with expertise in health problems related to women, such as gynaecologists. There was also a shortage of paramedical staff in these centres. Sources said that the Government had earlier fixed the monthly honorarium between Rs. 15,000 and Rs. 20,000. But there was little response from doctors. He also informed the District Health Officers and District Surgeons that they could appoint as consultants candidates holding a bachelor’s degree in science along with a certificate in Hospital Management to ensure better coordination and improve the quality of service in government hospitals and health centres in the district.

Health Commissioner Basavaraju, Director of the National Rural Health Mission Nilay Mitash, Planning Director Mohan Raj and Director of the Health Department Usha Vasankar were present.
