KOCHI: The LDF government was neglecting the issues plaguing the State, said senior Congress leader K. Karunakaran.

Inaugurating the public meeting held as a prelude to the district meeting of the party on Tuesday, Mr. Karunakaran urged the party workers to work unitedly for the party as “only the Congress could save the country.”

The prices of essential commodities have gone up and the law and order situation has worsened. Housebreaks and dacoity were on the rise and the police had failed to protect the people, he said.

In his address, Opposition leader Oommen Chandy said the State government could not earmark any funds for providing rice at subsidised rates to the people of the State even while the neighbouring States of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh were providing rice at the rate of Rs. 2 per kg.

Even as the prices of essential commodities were soaring, the State government, which failed to take measures for controlling the prices, was trying to save its face by blaming the Central Government. The CPI (M)-led government was committed only to the party and party workers and not to the people of the State, he said.

KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala said the two-year LDF rule in the State has failed to bring in any progress. The LDF government was highlighting the Smart City project as its major achievement. However, it was the Congress government that brought the project to the State, Mr. Chennithala said. Ernakulam DCC president V.J. Poulose presided.

Congress leaders P.P. Thankachan, Ajay Tharayil, M. I. Shanavas, Dr. M.A. Kuttappan, Benny Behannan, G. Karthikeyan, Thalekunnil Basheer, P.C. Chacko, A.C. Jose and K.V. Thomas, K. Babu and V.D. Satheesan, MLAs, attended.

Earlier, hundreds of Congress workers marched from Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium, Kaloor, to the Marine Drive as part of the district rally organised by the party.
