HYDERABAD: The GHMC will hereafter (from June) make minimum wage payments to the sanitary contract workers through bank accounts with standard deductions of ESI and EPF credited to them. The decision was taken following several complaints from workers that wages were not being paid properly. Commissioner and Special Officer C.V.S.K. Sarma on Tuesday evening announced a new set of guidelines to ensure prompt and just payment of wages to contract workers not only in the sanitary department but also those working in departments of veterinary, transportation and entomology wings. Accounts will have to be opened in State of Bank of Hyderabad branches in the names of the workers by the contractor concerned. Once GHMC issues cheque to the contractor, he has to deposit the same in the bank along with a statement of workers names, their account numbers and wages. The contractor concerned has to submit the details to the medical officer concerned when submitting the bill and the names have to be certified by the sanitary supervisor. The medical officer and the deputy commissioner must ensure that the attendance of contracting units are maintained as also payments made with requisite deductions. Respective drawing officers in the other departments like veterinary, transport and entomology section too should see that the same system of opening workers accounts and minimum wages paid is done.
