Rs. 85-lakh project to be implemented

Development works worth Rs. 5 crore is already in progress near the temple

Cloakrooms, rest room and shoe stands are to be constructed

MADURAI: A Rs. 85-lakh project to improve the ambience around Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple here is all set to take off.

To be funded in equal measure by the Tourism department and the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments department, the project envisages construction of cloakrooms, rest house for tourists and shoe-stand enclosures.

This project would be in addition to the Rs. 5 crore-development works under way in and around the Meenakshi temple with Tourism Department funds, said Collector S.S. Jawahar.

Apart from constructing cloakrooms and shoe stands near the five towers of the Meenakshi temple, a rest room for tourists would be constructed on temple land at Ellis Nagar, he said.

Tourist Officer, K. Dharmaraj, said that the design of the structures would be drawn by the HR and CE department which would call for tenders to execute the project.

Expertise sought

B. Raja, Joint Commissioner (HR and CE) and Executive Officer of the temple said, “We are planning the constructions with the front elevation reflecting the temple’s architecture.” Suggestions had been sought from renowned sculptor and architect M. Muthiah Stapati.

Since puja items were being sold at the same place where the shoe stands are located, the new construction would ensure that they were separated.

“This is part of the overall beautification work being carried out in areas surrounding the temple to improve the temple premises to attract tourists,” he said.
