Sea Cadets begin training camp

Staff Reporter

180 cadets, instructors at camp

KOCHI: One hundred and eighty cadets and instructors are attending a 10-day camp of the Sea Cadet Corps (SCC) being held at the Seamanship School, Naval Base, Kochi.

School from Ooty

They include 20 cadets from Good Shepherd School, Ooty. This is for the first time that a school from outside Kerala is participating in the SCC camp. Lt. Cdr. (SCC) O. R. Mohan Lal, the training officer, is assisted by S/Lt (SCC) Sanjay and midshipman Meera in the conduct of the camp which will conclude on May 13.

Formation

The SCC came into force in 1938 at Karachi and was relocated post-Partition to Mumbai in 1966 as T S Jawahar. There are 14 SSC units in the country. The Kochi unit of the SSC was commissioned in 1975 and now has cadets from over 30 schools of Kochi. Cadets are trained on all Sundays at the Seamanship School on seamanship and allied subjects. During the past one year, the unit took part in events like the Republic Day parade, cycle and sailing expeditions, rifle-firing etc.

The SCC is a purely non-governmental organisation and is supported by subscriptions from cadets and various organisations. The Southern Naval Command and INS Venduruthy too provide immense support. The Seamanship School administers the Sea Cadet Corps at Kochi.

Closing ceremony

May 13 will see the closing ceremony of the 10-day camp which includes a ceremonial parade and cultural programmes evening.
