In bad shape: Dabeerpura bridge has become a threat to motorists. —

Hyderabad: Is the old city’s first flyover at Dabeerpura showing signs of wear and tear? It appears so if the battered road is any indication. A portion of the road on one side has slightly bowed down while on the other it has distended.

Vehicular traffic coming from the Chanchalguda jail side towards Dabeerpura darwaza gets a jolt when it suddenly comes upon the hump on the road resembling a speed breaker.

The problem is said to be in the expansion joints which have developed cracks. One can clearly see the wide gaps in the road segment.

Expansion joints are designed to safely absorb the heat inducted expansion and contraction of construction material.

Remedial steps

Alarmed by its condition, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has commenced remedial measures to check the rot in this two-decade old bridge.

It has engaged the services of a private consultant, Civil Aid Technoclinic, to conduct inspection. For the last one week, the latter has been making a detailed assessment of the flyover.

Big holes have been drilled at various places under the bridge and the material collected for testing.

“There is no cause for concern. A routine inspection is being carried out as the bridge is 20 years old,” says R. Dhan Singh, Chief Engineer (Maintenance), GHMC.

Authorities are awaiting report from Civil Aid. Once it is received, the remedial measures will commence, it is said.
