Give priority to Tamil Nadu workers in projects

Special Correspondent

“Compensation, safety, are issues that are not given top priority by big builders and contractors”

TAMBARAM: Calling upon the State government to closely monitor the welfare of workers in the construction industry, the Rashtriya Mazdoor Seva Construction Workers Union said priority should be given to people from Tamil Nadu for employing workers in projects in and around Chennai.

During a meeting at Camp Road near here on Monday evening, in connection with May Day, speakers from the Union charged that safety and compensation were some of the issues that were not given top priority by big builders and contractors.

After intervention

Speakers said there were several instances when compensation to injured workers or the next of kin of those killed were handed over only after intervention by groups involved with the unorganised workers.

Common practice

Chittibabu Raj, State president of the Union, said it was a common practice for contractors engaged by private companies and even the government to employ workers from north Indian States, while those from Tamil Nadu were ignored. Such a trend had to be stopped as families from Tamil Nadu were deprived of employment opportunities.

Meagre sums

Stating that some builders paid meagre sums to certain sections of the unorganised workers, Mr. Chittibabu said there should be a mechanism to ensure that all workers cutting across their trades in the industry received the basic minimum wages as stipulated by laws. And all builders should ensure a minimum standard of quality of life to workers by providing decent accommodation, power supply, water and adequate sanitation facilities among others, Mr. Chittibabu said.
