UPA has insulted scientists, armed forces: Advani

Special Correspondent

Centre criticised for not observing Pokharan anniversary

L.K. Advani

BANGALORE: Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha L.K. Advani on Tuesday alleged that the United Progressive Alliance Government has insulted the country’s scientists, armed forces and the proud NRIs by refusing to observe the tenth anniversary of Pokharan nuclear tests on May 11. “What kind of a government is it. It does not want to observe the anniversary of Pokharan blasts which made the country proud,” Mr. Advani remarked while addressing a pubic meeting at the National College Grounds in Bangalore on Tuesday night to campaign for the party. He said the National Democratic Alliance Government headed by Atal Bihari Vajpayee had done the country proud by undertaking Pokharan blasts on May 11, 1998. “We were flooded with responses from the NRIs who were of the view that the country’s stature had increased due to such nuclear test.”

He said refusal to observe the nuclear test anniversary was also an insult to the team of dedicated scientists headed by scientists Dr. Homi Jehangir Bhabha, who laid the foundation for the country’s atomic energy programme.

Expressing concern over the price rise, Mr. Advani alleged that the Left parties, who had supported the UPA Government, were also responsible for the increase in prices. Terming their protest against the price rise as “hypocritic and betrayal of people,” he called upon people to punish the Left parties.

Mr. Advani claimed credit for evolution of Bangalore as the country’s IT capital by stating that the NDA’s IT policy had helped in such an achievement of Bangalore. He took exception to the Congress claiming credit for Bangalore’s IT achievements.

Appealing to people to give a clear verdict in favour of the BJP in the coming polls, he said his party would not only ensure that Karnataka was well administered, but would also turn Bangalore into a model city for other urban centres in the country.

He launched a criticism against the Congress for not projecting any of its leaders as chief ministerial candidate in Karnataka. Alleging that the Congress was indirectly projecting several leaders as its possible chief ministerial candidates, Mr. Advani said: “This is a deception of the worst kind.” He came down heavily on the Janata Dal (Secular) for not transferring power to the BJP and appealed to people to punish both the Janata Dal (Secular) and the Congress in the coming elections.
