HYDERABAD: A 19-year-old housewife, Salma Begum, on Tuesday approached the Sanathnagar police alleging that her husband, Mohd. Hameed, got her tonsured for not giving the additional dowry he had demanded. The Sanathnagar police arrested Hameed, an auto-rickshaw driver, after registering a case of dowry harassment against him. Salma Begum of Hafeezpet married Hameed of Allapur three months ago. “A month after the marriage, he started harassing me for additional dowry and suspects my fidelity,” she told the police. According to Begum, her husband took her to a barber and got her tonsured a month ago. Though elders held a ‘panchayat’ and counselled him, Hameed allegedly continued to harass his wife. Begum went back to her parents house and lodged a complaint with the police on Tuesday. “We called the barber who tonsured the woman. He maintained that Begum did not raise any objection then,” the Sanathnagar Inspector M. Sridhar Reddy said.
