MADURAI: In an effort to make Madurai a slum-free city, a Rs. 300-crore project was being implemented to ensure that the urban poor were able to construct concrete houses, Mayor G. Thenmozhi said on Tuesday. “Loans will be arranged for the economically backward people to raise the requisite capital,” she said addressing a function here to disburse assistance under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission. Under the ‘Basic Services to Urban Poor’ component of the Centrally-sponsored Mission, each beneficiary would receive a grant of Rs. 64,400 along with a bank loan of Rs. 20,000. Of the total Rs. 92,000, the borrower’s margin would be a mere Rs. 7,600, according to Lead District Manager KN. Subramanian. Even for bank loan, the interest was only four per cent under differential rate of interest to be paid in 84 monthly instalments of Rs. 275 a month. According to a Corporation release, 6,361 persons were given Rs. 2.25 crore under Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy Maternity Assistance Scheme so far. Another 1,419 were given Rs. 66.65-lakh assistance under the scheme on Tuesday by the Mayor. Collector S. S. Jawahar said that the quality of service at the 42 primary health centres in the district would be on a par with the private sector. “There will be no need for villagers to go to private hospitals to avail treatment.” Corporation Commissioner D.J. Dinakkaren said that the housing loan scheme was operational only in three Corporations in the State.
