Urge Sri Lanka to sign ceasefire pact with LTTE: Vaiko

MADURAI: India should urge Sri Lanka to sign a ceasefire agreement with Liberation Tigers of Tamil Ealam (LTTE) as hundreds of innocent Tamils’ lives and security were at stake, said Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Vaiko on Tuesday.

Briefing presspersons here, he criticised the idea of the Centre supporting the Sri Lankan government to prevent Pakistan or China from setting its foot in Colombo.

As an alliance partner at the Centre, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam cannot distance itself from this issue and will be held responsible for all the actions taken by the Centre, he said.

On inflation, he said it was a reflection of the rise in prices of commodities. Quoting the Secretary, Department of Agriculture and Cooperation, P.K. Mishra, he said compared to last year’s statistics, rice production had increased by 20 million tonnes and wheat production by 10 million tonnes this year.

But, despite increase in production, prices had escalated because of futures trading, online trading and speculative trading, he said and sought a ban on such practices immediately.

The Centre and State should own responsibility for the increase in prices, he said.

He said the MDMK would organise its regional conference in Chennai on June 18.
