EXCESS SUPPLY: A heap of chillies being kept at a wholesale shop in Manapparai.
MANAPPARAI: Prices of chillies have registered a fall this season at the wholesale market here, following a bumper harvest of the crop in Andhra Pradesh. Growers, consumer activists and wholesale dealers say that this is the first time in the last decade that the prices have dipped.
Manapparai is a major market for chillies with a number of villages, including Balaviduthi, Poolanpatti, Ponnakoundanur, Thavalai Veeranpatti and T. Reddiyapatti, accounting for vast areas under the crop. Growers, who market the produce at wholesale units here, say a 15-kg bag fetched Rs.600 this season, against Rs.800 last year.
M. Krishnan of Thavalaiveeranpatti village says he has been raising the crop for four decades. It used to register an upward trend in prices. This year, the yield was far below normal, but huge arrivals from Guntur had an adverse impact on the local market in Tiruchi and Pudukottai districts.
K. Muthusamy, a wholesale dealer, who has been in the trade for the past four-and-a half decades, says that the arrivals commenced in late February and peaked during late April and mid-May. “With prices registering a fall even during the peak of harvest, prospects of a rise appear bleak for the rest of the season,” he added.
