Staff Reporter

GOLD RUSH: The crowd at a jewellery shop in Kollam on the occasion of ‘akshaya tritiya’ on Wednesday.

KOLLAM: Jewellers across the State reported record retail sales of gold on the occasion of ‘akshaya tritiya’ on Wednesday. The sale, in spite of gold prices remaining high, indicates that ‘akshaya tritiya’ is gaining acceptance in the State as an auspicious occasion.

According to the Vedic calendar, the auspicious period of ‘akshaya tritiya’ continues on Thursday too. Spokesman for the All-Kerala Gold and Silver Merchants’ Association, S. Abdul Nazar, said Wednesday’s sale touched a record.

Retail price of gold during the 2007 ‘akshaya tritiya’ was Rs.940 per gram. This time, it stood at Rs.1,095 per gram. Yet, the crowd and sales at jewellery shops across the State was more than what was seen last year.

Mr. Nazar said 70 tonnes of gold was sold in the country during the period last year. This year’s sale is expected to cross that figure .
