Coimbatore: The flying squad officials of the District Administration have seized truck laden with 6.5 tonnes of rice meant for distribution under the Public Distribution System in the small hours of Wednesday. Following information, the flying squad Tahsildar V. Subramanian and team conducted vehicle checks on the Tamil Nadu – Kerala border at Velandavalam. When the officials tried to intercept one of the trucks, the driver sped past without stopping and after a hot chase the officials intercepted it. On examination, officials found 6.5 tonnes of rice in 130 bags in the truck. It was being smuggled to Kerala. During the last month alone, the officials have seized 27 tonnes of ration rice besides two trucks, one maruti van and seven bikes. In the event of information about smuggling of PDS commodities, the District Collector, V. Palanikumar has requested the public to inform the officials at 2300569 (District Supply Office) or flying squad Tahsildar at 94430-84010.
