Agitation: Plantation workers participating in a rally at Gudalur on Wednesday. Udhagamandalam: Thousands of plantation workers participated in a rally at Gudalur on Wednesday. For wagesIt was in protest against the failure of the Manjushree plantations at O’Valley near Gudalur to pay wages to its workers for the past four months. With the protesters staging a road blockade agitation, traffic on the Gudalur-Kozhikode road was disrupted for a short while. Revenue and police officials including the Revenue Divisional Officer Sadhanandhan held talks with the demonstrators. Listing their grievances on account of their wages not being paid for months together, the workers said that their Provident Fund payments were erratic and many have not got their retirement benefits. Their quarters were in a dilapidated condition. Shops closedPointing out that the crops grown in the estate included tea, cardamom, pepper, coffee and spices, they said that its management should be handed over to the government. Among those who addressed the workers were leaders of some of the plantation unions. During the procession some of the shopkeepers downed shutters.
