PUDUCHERRY: Members belonging to the Opposition and the Treasury Benches on Wednesday said Statehood for Puducherry would be a financially viable proposal, as it would fetch more Central grants and allocations. Speaking on the issue relating to the demand for full Statehood for the Union Territory, Education Minister M.O.H.F.Shahjahan said Puducherry, if made a full-fledged State, would get a share of 38 per cent from revenue of the Central government departments such as Post, Income Tax and Central Excise. It would also receive adequate financial assistance from the calamity relief fund, he added. If it was made a State, the Centre would give it the “clean slated status” waiving its liabilities of over Rs.2,000 crore, besides providing funds for non-plan expenditure for the first five years, he pointed out.
