PANAJI: The Goa Commissioner for NRI Affairs in tie-up with the Centre for Development Studies, the Department of Planning and Statistics of the Government of Goa and the Xavier Centre of Historical Research will conduct a Goa migration monitoring study. The purpose of the study, according to Goa Commissioner of NRI Affairs Eduardo Faleiro, is to collect data on migration from Goa as well as into Goa and analyse its impact on the social and economic conditions of the State. The study will report on the demographic, social, economic characteristics of the emigrants, impact of migration on social sectors such as education and health and will contain special reports on women and children left behind. The study will address the problems encountered by emigrants in the countries of their destination, Mr. Faleiro, former Union Minister of State for External Affairs, said here last week. A comprehensive survey of households throughout Goa will be conducted to measure the volume of migration and to analyse its socio-economic consequences. The study is expected to be completed within a year. The Centre for Development Studies is a Kerala-based autonomous research centre funded by the Union Government. The State Government, at the instance of the NRI Affairs Commissioner, has appointed a nodal officer in the State Directorate of Industries to assist NRIs willing to invest in Goa.
